Be The Match

In my recent perusal of social media, I ran across a story that for the very first time caused me to take action, even if it’s small. I am hoping to spread awareness on the issue which is not widely known.

The story is centered around a beautiful baby boy who is only six months old. This little boy is fighting for his life from the lack of his own immune system. The cause is a rare immunity disorder. There is one thing that can save this little boys life and that’s a bone marrow transplant. I am pasting the article here for further information.

He is just one of many such stories. There are plenty more out there, all we have to do is find them.

Unfortunately, a match for the donation of bone marrow is extremely hard to come by, with siblings also having a small chance for being a match for each other. The hope is that, with enough willing donors a suitable one can be found. However, the only way that we can make that happen is by being registered as potential donors.

Be The Match, which is run by the National Marrow Donor Program, is the largest registry in the world. Signing up with them online takes ten minutes and for anyone between the ages of 18 and 44, it’s free. A kit is then sent to the house to allow you to send in a cheek swab.

As I write this, I am waiting for my own cheek swab kit to come in the mail, and eagerly might I add. Though I know chances are slim, I am giving someone out there the chance to see if I match with them. To see, if I can give them a chance at a future. We should all educate ourselves on this, and take action, even if it’s small. All you have to do is ask yourself, what if it’s someone you love that needs the help? What if it was your son or daughter?

  1. What a beautiful thing you are doing Agata. I know this is close to your heart. Giovanni didnt need a bone marrow but he did need help like blood just in case. He is so healthy and by you spreading the word you are making other children and adults healthy. I cant give blood cause of all my illnesses but I am a organ donor whatever they can use to help someone stay alive. I admire you so much. You are a great mother a loving life a beautiful author and you make a mean turkey lol. Im proud to have you as my daughter in law. Love you xoxoxo ❤
